MAGALENA BAY—IMAGINAL DISK
SOPHOMORE ALBUM IMAGINAL DISK OUT NOW TO MASSIVE CRITICAL ACCLAIM VIA MOM+POP MUSIC
The upcoming run is in continued celebration of the band’s wildly successful sophomore album, Imaginal Disk, released to widespread critical acclaim in August via Mom+Pop Music, written and produced in full by Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin —get it HERE. Featured on Best of 2024 lists from Paste Magazine— which named single “Death & Romance” the #1 song of the year—The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Vulture, Pitchfork, Stereogum, Vogue and more, Imaginal Disk found Magdalena Bay selling out every date of their 2024 North American and European/U.K. headline tours, making their late night debut on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” with a performance of “Image,” which was later reworked by Grimes, and even getting a nod to the Imaginal Disk album cover from Rosalía’s Halloween costume.
Critical acclaim for Imaginal Disk…
“This record improves upon the last one in nearly every way—it can be dreamy, it can be slightly skuzzy, it is often sort of just a bit askew, but it also feels self-contained within a little snow globe imagining its own world...this record sounds like a group that has discovered exactly what they want their songs to do and how to get them to do it.”—NPR Music
“In the current pop landscape, there are few acts as exciting—or as remarkably consistent—as Magdalena Bay...Imaginal Disk is nothing if not a window into the minds of two weird and wonderful geniuses at work.”—Vogue
“They craft this impulse into a maximalist, brute-force expansion of pop music’s boundaries—not quite 'recession pop,' a hyper-online catch-all for dystopian dance music, but the creation of a liminal space where everything, from choruses to keyboards to convictions, feels and sounds convincingly 8D.”—Pitchfork
“Few groups are making as inventive, catchy pop music as Magdalena Bay…Their music, often narrative-based and paired with equally stunning visuals, excels in tension, pairing gossamer-sounding production with dark lyrics.”—Vulture
“These songs take twists and turns that mirror the futuristic bent of the lyrics, and it’s immediately memorable despite its thrilling unpredictability. The Miami-bred, Los Angeles-based musicians double down on their ideas here, and it’s refreshing to hear glimmering pop music that is this unafraid of itself, carving its own singular path.”—Stereogum
“a wide, swirling, hazy record that ventures between heady psych trips and funky, lilty pop songs...With Imaginal Disk, Magdalena Bay are pushing themselves out of their comfort zone.”—Paste Magazine
“this new synth-heavy sound feels more playful and bouncy, crafting new otherworldly limits in their own little electro-pop world.”—V Magazine
“supremely enjoyable”—Consequence
Additionally, the band is gearing up for a run of sold-out European and U.K. tour dates following their sold-out, 21-date headline Imaginal Mystery Tour last month in North America—see full tour routing below and get tickets HERE.
Magdalena Bay is the Los Angeles by way of Miami duo consisting of Mica Tenenbaum (vocals, producer, songwriter) and Matthew Lewin (producer, songwriter). The two first met at an after-school music program in Miami where they grew up, bonding over shared musical influences and eventually starting a prog rock band Tabula Rasa. That band broke up, but when Tenenbaum and Lewin crossed paths again in college, they reconnected with the goal of making something closer to pop music that blends retro and futuristic elements under the moniker Magdalena Bay. They released a series of EPs leading up to their critically acclaimed debut album, Mercurial World, in 2021 and went on to sell out their first headlining tour, play numerous festivals around the world—including Coachella in 2023, tour with Charli xcx, Caroline Polachek, Flume and collaborate with Lil Yachty, JIHYO, Blu DeTiger and more.
